Why does your skin look tired in summer?

Summer skin care - smoothie, fruit and a hat on a bright table

You come back from the beach with a great tan, but a few days later your skin looks dry, somehow tired, and the fine lines are easier to count. You are not imagining it. Summer affects your skin in a very specific way.

Does this sound familiar in summer?

  • Skin feels drier and tighter after a day in the sun
  • The tan fades, but a tired, dull look lingers
  • Fine lines show more clearly than they do in winter

Why the sun ages your skin

Your skin owes its firmness and elasticity to collagen, the protein that keeps it taut. It declines with age, but the biggest accelerator is not the years, it is the sun.

UV rays are the leading cause of skin aging. A review names sunlight as the primary external factor in skin aging (Fisher et al., 2002). The mechanism is clear: UV activates enzymes that break down collagen in the skin, which leads to wrinkles and loss of elasticity (Pittayapruek et al., 2016). Add the way heat and sun dry the skin out, and the picture is complete.

It is not the years but the accumulated sun that ages skin the most. And summer is its season.

What actually helps (before any supplement)

The best-proven skincare is also the simplest. It is worth making it your foundation before you think about anything from within:

  • Sunscreen every day, even when it is cloudy. This is the number-one measure against aging.
  • Avoid direct sun in the strongest hours, and wear a hat and sunglasses.
  • Drink enough water, skin loses moisture faster in the heat.
  • Do not smoke, and get enough sleep, your skin repairs itself at night.

Where collagen and vitamin C come in

Care from the outside can be supported from within. Two components make sense here.

Vitamin C is essential for your skin's own collagen synthesis and acts as an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from the sun's oxidative damage (Pullar et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2018). That role is well established.

Collagen powder, meanwhile, has become a popular skin supplement, and there is research behind it. A meta-analysis of 19 controlled trials found that taking hydrolyzed collagen for about 90 days improves skin hydration and elasticity and reduces wrinkles (de Miranda et al., 2021). A newer meta-analysis of 26 trials reaches a similar conclusion for hydration and elasticity (Pu et al., 2023).

An honest word about collagen: a supplement helps, but it does not replace sun protection.

The research is encouraging but moderate: the trials are mostly short, mostly in women, and some are funded by manufacturers. Results come slowly, over weeks, not days. The strongest anti-aging measure is still sun protection, and collagen and vitamin C are a good complement, not a substitute.

What to realistically expect

1

The first weeks: skin often feels more hydrated, this comes earliest.

2

Around 8-12 weeks: in the studies, improvements in elasticity show up with regular use.

3

Keep in mind: without sun protection, no supplement can undo the damage from the sun.

What customers say

"I drink it every morning with breakfast. After about a month my skin feels more hydrated and soft."

Frequently asked questions

When will I see a difference?

Hydration is felt earliest, within a few weeks. For elasticity, the studies point to around 8-12 weeks of regular use.

Does it replace sunscreen?

No. Sun protection is the best-proven measure against skin aging. Collagen and vitamin C are a complement from within, not a substitute.

How do I take it?

One serving a day, stirred into water or food. Consistency matters more than quantity.

Protect your skin from the sun, keep it hydrated, and support it from within. This summer can be good for it.
