How your body produces vitamin D — and why it can't for half the year
Vitamin D isn't a vitamin in the classic sense. Your skin makes it itself: under the action of UVB rays, a molecule in the skin called 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted into a precursor of vitamin D3. From there it travels through the liver and kidneys, where it's activated in two stages — and only then does it become biologically active.
The limitation is geographical, not just a seasonal feeling. UVB rays reach the earth in sufficient quantity only when the sun sits high above the horizon. At a low angle, the rays pass through a much thicker layer of atmosphere and scatter before reaching the skin. The UK sits between 50° and 59° north latitude — from roughly October to April, the sun's angle is too low and vitamin D synthesis in the skin essentially stops. A clear sky doesn't help: it's the angle that matters, not the brightness.
That's why, during the darker half of the year, vitamin D needs to come from food or a supplement. This formula provides 2000 IU (50 µg) of vitamin D3 — 1000% of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV), together with vitamin K2 (MK-7) and coenzyme Q10.
What vitamin D contributes to in the body
1 · Immune system
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin D receptors are also found in immune cells.
▼
2 · Calcium and bones
Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
▼
3 · Muscles
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of muscles
▼
4 · Cell division
Vitamin D has a role in the process of cell division
Why D3 and K2 are in one tablet
The reason isn't marketing, but both regulatory and biological: both vitamin D and vitamin K have an independent, officially recognised contribution to the maintenance of normal bones. These are two separate authorised claims that meet at the same point — a rare case among vitamins.
Form matters. Vitamin K2 exists in several forms called menaquinones. This one is MK-7 (menaquinone-7) — the one with the longest chain and, accordingly, the longest time in circulation among the menaquinones. That's precisely why MK-7 is dosed once daily, unlike shorter-lived forms.
40 µg K2 = 53,3% of the NRV, which, by the official definition, counts as a high content. Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal blood clotting.
Coenzyme Q10 — what it is
Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a fat-soluble compound found in the inner membrane of the mitochondria — the structures where the cell produces energy. There, it takes part in the electron transport chain, carrying electrons between the complexes of the respiratory chain.
The body synthesises it on its own. In this formula, Q10 is present in an amount of 5 mg and is listed as an ingredient — in the European Union, coenzyme Q10 has no authorised health claims, so we don't attribute any effects to it.
3 facts on why vitamin D is irreplaceable
💡 Fact #1 · Almost every cell has a receptor for it
Vitamin D receptors (VDR) have been found in practically every cell type — immune, muscle, bone, gut, brain. Few substances in the body have such a broad scope of action.
💡 Fact #2 · Without it, calcium from food is largely wasted
With insufficient vitamin D, the gut absorbs only around 10–15% of the calcium in food. With sufficient levels, absorption is around 30–40%. That's precisely why vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium.
💡 Fact #3 · It works like a hormone, not a vitamin
After being activated in the liver and kidneys, vitamin D acts like a steroid hormone — binding to receptors in the cell nucleus and regulating the activity of hundreds of genes. Technically, it's a hormone precursor, not a vitamin.
Who it's for: anyone who wants a serious dose of vitamin D3 during the period when the skin can't produce it — from October to April — combined with vitamin K2. One tablet a day, for 60 days.
